How to customize your newsletter footer
This article covers the Visual Editor, beehiiv's post editing experience. Starting August 3, 2026, all newly created beehiiv workspaces launch directly into the Visual Editor by default. Workspace admins can also switch an existing workspace over to the new experience. Still using the legacy post editor? See Using the legacy post editor for the Write and Style tab navigation instead.
The footer appears at the end of your post, following the body content, and typically includes your publication's address and an unsubscribe link. You can also tailor it to include contact details, social media links, or legal disclaimers.
For inspiration for your footer, see the beehiiv blog post 6 Email Newsletter Footer Examples To Wow Your Audience.
Accessing the footer
Click directly on the footer at the bottom of your post canvas. The panel opens scoped to Style > Email footer.
Required footer elements
A couple of footer elements can't be changed:
-
Address requirement: By law, your email footer must include an address. This can't be removed through design customization, you can update in the Style > Email footer or you can edit the address in your publication settings.
- ‘Powered by beehiiv’ tag: This helps us maintain competitive pricing and is part of our business model. It can't be changed on most plans, though private branding is available for Max and Enterprise customers.
Enabling the email layout setting
The email layout setting applies a uniform look to your header and footer across all your email templates, preset emails, and automation emails at once, with no per-post adjustments needed.
To enable it:
- From the left panel, go to Settings > Emails.
- Scroll to the Email layout section.
- Toggle on Apply new email layout.
Once enabled, the refreshed styling applies automatically. You can still customize individual posts beyond the defaults using the steps below.
Footer styling options
Once you've opened the footer panel, you'll find its settings grouped into Typography, Fill, Outline, Layout, Spacing, and Advanced options. Here's what each one controls.
Typography
- Font family: Font used for footer text.
Fill
- Background color, Font color, Border color: Core footer colors.
Outline
- Top border thickness: Thickness of the footer's top divider, in pixels.
- Border width: How much of the footer's width that divider spans, as a percentage.
Layout
- Alignment: Left or center justify the footer content.
Spacing
- Margin, Padding: Standard spacing controls.
Advanced options
- Social background, Social icon color: Styling for social icons in the footer. This controls appearance only, not which platforms show up (see below).
- Copyright text: Override your publication's default just for this post. The refresh icon resets it back to default.
- Custom footer: Click Edit content to add your own footer content (see below).
- Address shown: Override your publication's default address just for this post, with the same reset option.
Including additional custom footer content
Custom footer content lets you add your own text, links, or blocks beneath the standard footer on any post or template, perfect for recurring calls-to-action, sponsor mentions, or extra sign-off details you want readers to see every time. Here's how to set it up:
- Click Edit content next to Custom footer to open the footer content editor in a new window.
- Type / in the content box to access the same slash menu tools used elsewhere in your posts.
- Toggle on Enable custom footer content to make sure it appears at the top of your post footer.
- Use Preview to see your custom footer in action.
- Click Save when you're satisfied with your changes.
This footer content is unique to the specific email post or template, so you can create a different one for each post, if you desire.
Updating social links in your footer
The Social background and Social icon color settings above control appearance only. To add or update which social platforms actually appear, go to Website > Builder > Settings > All general settings > Socials.
For full instructions, see How to add or update your post's social links.
Customizing the footer in your welcome email
The steps above apply to newsletter posts. The welcome email uses a separate editor, found in Settings > Emails > Preset Emails > Configure Welcome Email. For full instructions, see Setting up your welcome email.
