Configuring your recommendation slots

Recommendation slots control which publications your new subscribers see when they complete signup. Each slot has a type that determines how it fills, and a setting for whether it draws from free recommendations, paid recommendations, or both.

You can configure slots whether you're recommending publications for free, for pay, or a mix of both.

Open slot configuration

1. From the left panel dashboard, go to Recommendations (in the Grow section) > Outgoing recommendations > Overview > Preview tab > Click Edit slots.
   
   
2. The Edit slot modal will open, showing you the four slots that you can fill for your recommendations. 
   
3. Use the dropdowns for each slot to select your options. A preview will show on the right. 
   
4. When you’re done configuring your slots, click Publish to finalize your selections.

Slot types

For each slot, click the type dropdown and choose one of the following:

• Shuffle: Randomly cycles through your active recommendations, updated daily.
• Pinned: Always shows a specific recommendation you choose.
• Smart: Automatically matches a well-fitting publication for you.
• Your publication: Recommends one of your own other publications.
• None: Leaves the slot empty.

Free, paid, or both

For each slot, you can also choose whether it draws from Free, Paid, or Both types of recommendations.

You can have up to 3 active paid slots at a time. If you set a slot to Paid but don't have any eligible paid recommendations yet, you'll see a message in place of a preview.
