How to create and publish a post

This article covers the Visual Editor, beehiiv's post editing experience. Starting August 3, 2026, all newly created beehiiv workspaces launch directly into the Visual Editor by default. Workspace admins can also switch an existing workspace over to the new experience. Still using the legacy post editor? See Using the legacy post editor for the Write and Style tab navigation instead.

For those new to beehiiv, we've created this helpful resource guide on using the Post Builder to create and publish a post (your newsletter) from start to finish.

The post creation flow is organized into 5 tabs: Compose, Audience, Email, Web, and Review, at the top of the Post Builder. Use the Next button to move between pages in order, or click any of the 5 tabs to jump directly to a specific stage.

How to start a new post

Type beehiiv.new into your browser for a quick blank draft. Or, from the left panel, click the arrow next to New and select Blank draft post or Template post:

  • Blank draft post gives you an empty canvas, best for one-off posts or when you're still figuring out your format.
  • Template post opens your saved templates library, best once you've settled on a recurring structure, so each new issue starts pre-styled instead of rebuilt from scratch.

Compose page of the post flow

The Post Builder opens on the Compose page, where you write and style your content in the same place. Clicking any element on the canvas opens its styling options directly in the right-hand panel.

For the full walkthrough, including keyboard shortcuts and text formatting, see Options on the Compose page of the post flow. For grouping and bordering content, see Adding borders and managing sections in your posts.

Styling your post

Click any element to open its styling options in the right-hand panel, scoped to what you clicked. Read Customizing your post's design for the full settings breakdown.

Previewing your post

Changes appear directly in your post canvas as you make them, so you can see the overall look and feel as you go.

The canvas allows you to preview the email and web version of the post by using the toggle at the bottom to switch between web and email views.

Alternatively, you can click Preview in the top right corner for a more detailed check across different viewing experiences: how it appears in actual email clients, on desktop versus mobile, and for different subscriber tiers. From here you can also send yourself a test email to see the real thing land in your inbox, and generate a draft link to share with colleagues.

See Previewing and sending test emails of your post for the full walkthrough.

Collaborating with team members

beehiiv supports real-time collaborative editing. You'll see teammates' initials at the top of the editor while they're active. Leave comments by highlighting text and tagging someone with "@".

To access version history, click the sliders icon in the top toolbar, then select Version history from the More options menu.

Saving and using templates

Click the Save as template icon in the top toolbar to open your New template modal.  Name your template, and click Save template. See Creating and using newsletter templates for more.

Audience page of the post flow

On the Audience page, select your Email and Web audiences, uncheck either to publish to only one, and include or exclude specific segments for more targeted sends.

Email page of the post flow

Set your subject line, preview text, and optional A/B test. Add social sharing, like, and comment buttons, or override the Read Online URL in Advanced Settings.

Web page of the post flow

Customize your post's URL slug, gated email capture, comment permissions, audio version, SEO title and meta description, feed visibility, and a custom display date.

Review page of the post flow

Confirm your audience, email, and A/B settings, then schedule or publish immediately. All plans can post to social after publishing; Max and Enterprise plans get the AI Social Helper.

When you publish to both Email and Web, edits made after the campaign sends only appear on the Web version. If an A/B test is scheduled, the Web version can't be edited until the test period ends.
